Happy New Year!
November is National Novel Writing Month and to celebrate that John Gall has been organizing design-a-thons, where novelists submit a (really) brief description of their novel and in 24 hours a designer has to create a finish cover. You get three synopsis to choose. I chose SS Incubo Films until my daughter asked for help with her french homework and I found a bucket of plastic jewels in her closet. So instead of one, I submitted two. It was fun, except I lost sensation of my fingertips by the hot glue gun fixing all these sequins.

Is there something more going on, or do adults really just want to get to know “the brains of teenagers?”

Early this year I was the chairman for the Type Directors Club Communication Design competition and my dear friend Matteo Bologna of Mucca Design was commissioned to design the annual. Instead of showing the photographs of sleepless judges bundled for cold January weather, he got caricatures of all of us. The superb cast of judges this year included, Angela Voulangas, Art Chantry, Arem Duplessis, Bruce Willen (Post Typography), Fons Hickmann, Jason Kernevich (The Heads of State) and Mario Hugo. We have never looked better.

The last is a special issue of Serrote, a Brazilian literary magazine in which we have eight full pages of typographic illustration (with the portraits of Carlos Drumond de Andrade, Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, Edgar Allan Poe, George Bernard Shaw, J M Coetzee, Oscar Wilde, Salman Rushdie, Virginia Wolf made by the letters of their names).

The second, and most recent is Typographic Sketchbooks by the design gurus to be published this month by Princeton Architectural Press. It showcases personal sketch books of typographers and designers, among them such luminaries as Rian Hughes, Mathew Carter and Alex Trochut. So proud and humble to be included.
We are very happy that we have been featured recently in two books and a magazine.
The first, with four covers in it is The Best of Cover Design by Altitude Associates for Rockport, published in June. It features Little Bee (Art Direction by Jackie Seow/Simon & Schuster), Stacked (Art Direction by Amy King/Bloomsbury), The Vanishing of Katharina Linden (Art Direction by Robbin Schiff/Random House) and The Expeditions (Art Director by Paolo Pepe/Random House)

My friend Jonathan Parker wrote a great piece for Eye magazine on the Argentinian typographer Alejandro Paul. To show his type in use they chose two of my covers, Before You Suffocate Your Own Foolish Self and Nine Plants of Desire and the Hot House Flower. What an honor for me!
